In the midst of the 2013 British Columbia election season, I spoke with an aspiring Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) about an international issue facing local politicians: the renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty.

Under the treaty, America’s fourth largest river was bridled in the 1960s by a series of dams, but many Americans and Canadians continue to feel ripped off by the negotiations. In 2014, the terms of the Columbia River Treaty can start to be changed– and MLA candidate Joseph Hughes aims to make his community’s festering concerns heard.
